Hawaii is a very fascinating island. Even its origins are quite interesting. Didn’t you know that the eight Hawaii islands namely: Niihau, Kauai, Oahu, Maui, Molokai, Lanai, Kahoolawe and the Big Island of Hawaii were formed due to the eruption of under-sea volcanoes? Amazing isn’t it? A lot of volcanoes can be found in Hawaii and one of them, Mount Kilauea, is considered as the most active volcano in the world.
Aside from the white sand, clear waters and pristine nature, Hawaii’s history and culture can also be one contributing factor as to why it has become so famous for tourists all over the world. A lot of scenic spots and famous landmarks can be found in the islands of Hawaii – from ancient ruins to wartime structures.
December 7, 1941 during the World War II, Pearl Harbor in Oahu Island was greatly devastated by Japanese aerial forces resulting in the death of many soldiers, marines and civilians. To this day, Pearl Harbor honors the memory of this historical event with the Pearl Harbor Historic Sites namely: The USS Arizona Memorial, the Battleship Missouri Memorial, the USS Bowfin Submarine Museum & Park, the Pacific Aviation Museum and the USS Oklahoma Memorial. Pearl Harbor is the largest natural harbour in the state and is the only U.S naval base recognized as a National Historic Landmark.
Also situated in the island of Oahu is the Polynesian Cultural Center (PCC), this Polynesian-themed park or living museum is located in the northern shores of Oahu in Laie. It is about an hour’s drive from the famous Waikiki beach. Here you get to see eight simulated tropical villages including Hawaii, Samoa, Aotearoa (Maori New Zealand), Fiji, Marquesas, Tahiti and Tonga as well as Rapa Nui (Easter Island or Isla de Pascua) and performers demonstrating various arts and crafts from all over Polynesia.
Waimea Canyon located in the island of Kauai is the ‘Grand Canyon of the Pacific«. It stands up to 3,000 feet (900 m) deep and is approximately stretching up to ten miles (16 km) long. Waimea in Hawaiian language means «reddish water«, this refers to the erosion of the canyon’s red oil. Here you will find a spectacular view of the steep cliffs and rugged valley, fantastic colors and shapes of flora and fauna, a natural reserve and ranger station, 45 miles of trail and the Kokee Museum.
The Hawaii Volcanoes National Park in Big Island, Hawaii is now a World Heritage Site and an International Biosphere Reserve. It is a home to two of the world’s most active volcanoes, Kilauea and Mauna Lona. It also serves as a sanctuary to distinct plant and animal communities such as the happy-face spiders, carnivorous caterpillars and picture wing fliers. It has also become a refuge to many endangered species such as the hawksbill turtle, the Hawaiian goose, dark-rumped petrel, hawk and the hoary bat. It also continues the island’s Native Hawaiian culture and shelters numerous and important archaeological sites – places which will always reminds us about the people endlessly linked to this island.
